Start a US company from the United Kingdom.

British founders already have Stripe, good banks and an inexpensive UK limited company. They form US companies to sell to American customers as a US vendor, to raise from US investors, or to hold a US-facing brand. For a business run from the UK, a UK Ltd often does the job, and a US company earns its keep when the United States is the point.

01What changes because you live here

The filing is the same from anywhere. Four things aren't.

The tax treaty, whether Stripe will take you, which banks will open an account, and the time difference. Each was checked against its source in September 2026.

The tax treaty

In force

The United States and the United Kingdom have an income tax treaty in force. It can lower the US tax withheld on dividends, interest and royalties paid to you, if you claim it on a W-8BEN with your British tax number, and it settles which country taxes what when both could. The treaty rate on royalties and interest is 0%, which matters if you earn from licences, books or lending.

Stripe

Available locally

Stripe takes businesses registered in the United Kingdom, so you don't need a US company to use it. A US LLC gets you a US Stripe account instead, paid out in dollars to a US bank, which helps when most of your customers are American.

Banking

Mercury available

Mercury opens accounts remotely for US companies whose founders live in the United Kingdom. It asks for the EIN, the formation documents, your passport, a real business address and a description of the company's existing or planned US operations. Relay asks a non-US owner for a US address, an ITIN or Social Security Number and a US operating presence, so it rarely suits a founder living in the United Kingdom.

The time difference

UTC+1

New York is 5 hours behind the United Kingdom in summer. Everything we do is in writing, through your dashboard and email, and we reply within one business day, so the time difference rarely slows anything down.

Checked in September 2026 against the IRS list of tax treaties, Stripe's country page, and Mercury's and Relay's published country lists. If something here has changed, email us and we'll correct it the same day.

02What the United Kingdom expects

Owning a US company doesn't take you out of the United Kingdom's tax system.

The United Kingdom taxes its residents on income from anywhere in the world. Whether the LLC's profit counts as yours as it's earned, or only when you take it out, depends on how the United Kingdom treats a US LLC, and that's a question for a local tax adviser.

  • HMRC generally treats a US LLC as a company rather than as see-through. What the LLC pays you is usually a dividend in the UK, while the US may treat the same profit as yours as it's earned. That mismatch can tax the same profit twice, which is why many UK founders choose a US C-Corporation or a UK Ltd instead.
  • A company whose central management and control is in the UK is UK-resident for corporation tax, wherever it was formed. A US LLC run day to day from London may be a UK company for tax.
  • The US-UK treaty is in force and settles which country taxes what when both could. Royalties and interest are taxed at 0% under it.

05Questions

Questions from the United Kingdom.

If yours is not here, email us at [email protected] before you order.

For most businesses run from the UK, a UK Ltd: it's inexpensive, Stripe works, and HMRC understands it. A US company makes sense when the business needs to be American, because of US customers who want a US vendor, US investors, or a US-facing brand. HMRC's usual treatment of a US LLC as a company is the reason to take advice before choosing an LLC over a C-Corporation.

Yes. The United States doesn't require an LLC's owners to be US citizens or residents. You'll need a registered agent in the state, which every plan includes, and your passport for the bank. The filing is the same wherever you live. What changes is the tax treaty, the payment processors and the banks, which this page covers.

No. The filing, the EIN, the operating agreement, the bank application and the payment processors are all handled online. You don't need a visa or a trip.

The United States and the United Kingdom have an income tax treaty in force. It can lower the US tax withheld on dividends, interest and royalties paid to you, if you claim it on a W-8BEN with your British tax number, and it settles which country taxes what when both could. You don't need one for Stripe, because Stripe already takes businesses in the United Kingdom. A US LLC gives you a US Stripe account paid out in dollars to a US bank, which some founders prefer when most of their customers are American.
