02The straight answer
Should a founder abroad form in Alabama?
An Alabama LLC costs $200 to form, and since the 2024 tax year a small company usually owes no yearly tax and files no return. Over five years, that's cheaper than Wyoming. What Alabama lacks is Wyoming's familiarity with the banks and payment processors that review a non-resident's application. Unless the business will actually operate in Alabama, most founders abroad are better served by Wyoming.
Alabama is right anyway when
- You'll have staff, an office, a warehouse or property in the state
- A bank, a marketplace or a licensing body has told you the company must be formed in this state

A Wyoming LLC costs $102.40 to file, keeps owners off the public record, and is the state banks and payment processors are used to seeing from founders abroad. Here's the whole first year, from the same price list checkout uses.

Not always. Since the 2024 tax year, a company whose Business Privilege Tax works out at $100 or less is fully exempt, so it pays nothing and doesn't file the return. A company whose tax comes to more than $100 files and pays every year.
Yes. Alabama, like every state, doesn't require an LLC's owners to be US citizens or residents. It does require a registered agent with a street address in Alabama. An Alabama LLC files and pays the Business Privilege Tax only in a year the tax works out above $100.
It costs $200 to file, and usually nothing after that. Over five years that comes to $200 in state charges. A Wyoming LLC costs $342.40 over the same five years.
No. We file in Wyoming and Delaware only. For a founder outside the US, they're the two states worth being in, and we'd rather know two states well than fifty a little. If your business will have staff, an office, stock or property in Alabama, it'll need to register there whichever state formed it, and we'll tell you so before you order.

Most founders abroad choose Wyoming for an LLC, or Delaware for a corporation that will raise money. The order form explains the trade-off where you choose.
